Laser hair removal has been around for some time now. It can be used on any body part, including the upper lip, bikini, face, legs, underarms, and back. But some body parts are prone to sun exposure, so it’s better to learn what to do or avoid before and after the procedure to prevent skin damage.

Keep reading below to find answers to your worries about exposure to the sun before or after your laser hair removal treatment.

IS SUN EXPOSURE SAFE BEFORE LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT?

While considered safe, we still advise limiting direct sun exposure at least two weeks before treatment because it makes the skin more sensitive to heat.

Using a laser on heat-sensitive and tanned skin can cause hyperpigmentation, burns, and scarring. If you decide to go out in the sun, the golden rule is to protect the skin with a minimum factor of 40; ideally, factor 50 is recommended to create a layer of protection for your skin.

When you undergo treatment, your skin will not be prone to damage and potential risks associated with laser on tanned skin.

WHAT IF YOU HAVE A SUNTAN BEFORE LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT?

If you have a suntan before the treatment, advise your laser practitioner before proceeding. They will conduct a skin test patch to avoid skin damage in the treatment area and determine if the area is safe to treat. Usually, a skin test patch is done two weeks post-suntan. However, suppose the skin is exceptionally tanned. In that case, the start of your treatment may be delayed by a few weeks until the skin is settled and closer to its natural colour.

Here at Calveo, we use Diode lasers with the latest technology. Our machines are from both Venus Systems and Lumenis. Both benefit from integrated cooling system features, making the treatment comfortable and more suited to smaller, more delicate areas.

WHAT IF YOU HAVE SUNBURNT SKIN BEFORE YOUR LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT?

Sunburnt skin is a contraindication for laser hair removal and will increase the likelihood of irritation, burns, and complications. The skin must take time to heal, and any good clinic will refuse to treat the area and reschedule the laser appointment later date.

It is also worth mentioning that self-tanning products should be avoided for at least one week before laser treatments.

IS SUN EXPOSURE SAFE AFTER YOUR LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT?

Limit direct sun exposure two weeks after the procedure, as your skin is still sensitive to heat and needs to settle for healing. Prolonged UV rays exposed to new laser hair treatment may cause skin damage. If you cannot avoid going under the sun, ensure you put enough sunscreen with a high SPF to create a layer of protection with regular reapplication. Unlike before treatment, you may need to wear sun-protective clothes, such as a wide-brimmed hat and long sleeves, for a week.

WHAT IF YOU’RE DUE TO TRAVEL TO A HOTTER CLIMATE?

Apart from preventive measures to protect your skin from the sun, like sunscreen and wearing sun-protective clothing, it would be best to tell your practitioner before you travel. Your practitioner will give you aftercare treatment advice for laser hair removal to avoid treatment disruption and preserve the results.

It is essential to take precautions following treatment, for your treated skin will be extra vulnerable to infection.

At Calveo, we always factor in the client’s overseas holiday plans to avoid treatment directly before or after the holidays, thus minimising potential risks.

WHAT SHOULD YOU AVOID AFTER YOUR LASER HAIR REMOVAL TREATMENT?

As mentioned, your skin will be susceptible to infection after treatment. So best to avoid activities that may cause infection. These activities include exercising, sauna, jacuzzi, and swimming in the ocean or the pool 24 hours after the laser since sweat and water are unsuitable for the treated area.

Refrain from exfoliating for at least five days after your laser session, as the skin may still be sensitised.
